While researching material for my PhD that focuses on older people learning new skills, I came across an interesting phenomenon. I encountered many Jewish Holocaust survivors in Melbourne who, while being denied opportunities for formal education in their youth, returned to study in their retirement and pursued higher degrees after their obligations to their families were fulfilled.
