The sidelined story of the destruction of Lithuanian Jewry: perpetration and resistance
The destruction of Lithuanian Jewry does not fit the dominant narratives of the Holocaust. The vast majority were killed near their homes and in existing sites such as the Ninth Fort of Kovno (Kaunas) and the pits of Ponar outside of Vilna (Vilnius). The resistance in both Kovno and Vilna also are unusual in the context of the Holocaust. Both ghettos gave rise to 'united' partisan movements—which happened nowhere else, and included many women.
